Description
The magnificent 'Blue Marble' photograph, one of the most iconic images of Earth that changed the way we view our planet forever, turned 50 on Wednesday. It was the first photograph taken of the full round Earth and is believed to be the most reproduced image of all time.
This classic photograph of Earth was taken on December 7, 1972 by the crew of the last Apollo mission, Apollo 17, as they traveled to the moon on their moon landing mission. The photograph was captured 18,000 miles (29,000 kilometers) from Earth.
Sharing the photograph on Instagram to celebrate their golden anniversary, NASA wrote: ''On December 7, 1972, 50 years ago, the crew of Apollo 17 took this photo of Earth while traveling to the Moon. Known today as the "blue marble," this image has since become one of the most iconic images of our homeworld."
