Description
A giant and mysterious object has been discovered off Daytona Beach Shores in Volusia County, Florida, leaving locals and officials stumped. The unknown object, which is composed of wood and possibly some metal, is about 80 feet (24.3 meters) long and was first noticed by passing beachgoers, the New York Times reported. Because the water covers it at high tide, it could not be roped off.
County officials told the Times that the mysterious object had previously been buried under the sand, but was revealed after Hurricane Nicole eroded the beach in November. The object began to protrude from the sand after Hurricanes Ian and Nicole hit Volusia County earlier this year, said Kevin A. Captain, a Volusia County spokesman.
As experts try to determine what it is, numerous speculations and theories have emerged on social media. While many claimed that it is part of an old shipwreck, others think that it is a piece of an old pier. Some people have also speculated that it is a part of the spectator seating that dates back to when NASCAR ran in Daytona Beach.
'It's a mystery. A lot of people think it's some kind of old boat,” Tamra Malphurs, a spokeswoman for Volusia County Beach Safety, told the New York Times.
The erosion on the beach has been "unprecedented," Volusia Deputy Beach Safety Chief Tammy Malphurs told CBS News affiliate WKMG. "We haven't seen this type of erosion in a long time," she said. "I've been on the beach for probably 25 years and that's the first time I've seen it exposed."
