Description
The ChatGPT chatbot has been reactivated in Italy after its creator OpenAI resolved issues raised by the Italian data protection authority, the agency and the company confirmed on Friday. OpenAI, backed by Microsoft Corp, took ChatGPT offline in Italy last month after the country's data protection authority, also known as Guarantor, temporarily banned the chatbot and launched an investigation into its alleged violation of privacy rules. of the application of artificial intelligence. Garante had given OpenAI until Sunday to address its concerns about the possibility that the chatbot could start operating again in the country.
Last month, Garante said that ChatGPT has an "absence of any legal basis justifying the massive collection and storage of personal data" to "train" the chatbot.
Guarantor also accused OpenAI of failing to verify the age of ChatGPT users who are believed to be 13 years or older. OpenAI said it will offer a tool to verify the age of users in Italy during registration.
The company said Friday that it will bring greater visibility to its privacy policy and user content opt-out form.
It will also provide a new form for users in the European Union to exercise their right to object to the use of personal data to train their models, a company spokesperson said.
The form asks those who wish to opt-out to provide detailed personal information, including evidence of data processing through relevant prompts.
Guarantor said that he recognizes the steps taken to combine technological progress with respect for people's rights and hopes that the company will continue on this path of compliance with European data protection regulations.
Italy was the first country in Western Europe to stop ChatGPT, but its rapid development has drawn the attention of lawmakers and regulators in several countries.
Following Guarantor's interest in ChatGPT, the European Data Protection Board, the body that brings together the national privacy watchdogs in Europe, created a chatbot working group earlier this month.
Guarantor said he would continue his investigation of ChatGPT and work with the task force.
