Description
The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked debate about its ability to outperform humans in various fields. This led to various tests being carried out to compare the performance of the AI and humans. One of these tests was performed on the revolutionary chatbot ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, to test its ability to solve the most difficult contests. Additionally, questions have been raised about how students can take advantage of AI to enhance their learning. In light of all these educational issues, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently spoke positively about using AI to teach children to read and write. On his "Gates Notes" website, the technologist-turned-philanthropist cited a keynote address at the ASU+GSV summit in San Diego, USA, where he predicted that in the next 18 months, AI will serve as an aid to the teacher providing feedback on writing.
"If you just take the next 18 months, RNs will come in as teaching assistants and give input on writing. And then they'll expand what we're capable of doing in math. Our math bottleneck is really more about how we fit in. across the system and adopt that teacher," Gates said in the interview.
For this, AI-powered tutoring services like ChatGPT Plus may come at a cost, but Bill Gates says they will always be more affordable and accessible than traditional human tutoring.
"We have some really cool tools today that, if fully adopted, would actually make more progress in math scores than we've done in the last 20 years. My optimism about edtech in general, then, is not about AI-only. It's a set of things, even before this latest advancement, where I think we're getting smarter and going out into the field," Gates added.
In early March, in a blog post titled "The AI Era Has Begun," Gates expressed his belief that AI-powered software promises to revolutionize the way people teach and learn. He praised the invention of ChatGPT as a demonstration of innovative technology, similar to its introduction to the graphical user interface in the 1980s.
Gates was inspired by his first encounter with the GPT model and reflected on the potential of AI in the next 10 years. Furthermore, he stressed that the focus should be on making these AI-based tools available to low-income countries and disadvantaged populations.
