Snapchats My AI chatbot faces criticism over user privacy and accuracy

Description

Snapchat's My AI chatbot is now available to non-paying users, generating a mix of funny memes and genuine concerns. The feature, which is powered by OpenAI's ChatGPT, rolled out to paid Snapchat+ users in February, attracting around a million additional subscribers in eleven weeks. Starting Monday, regular Snapchat users can interact with MY AI, which bills itself as "your new AI chatbot" that can help with just about anything. Users have taken to Twitter to share their experiences, with some using the bot as a therapist or a way to talk to an ex, creating a slam-worthy moment, cracking jokes and more. Others have accused My AI of lying, cheating, and being a creepy chat feature. Many memes posted on Tiktok and Twitter about My AI are lighthearted, with users sharing their jokes and concerns about the chatbot. However, some creators accused My AI of hiding things. A TikToker named evanpackardfinance posted an exchange with the bot about his location, in which My AI asked him where he likes to walk in his city. When asked directly, My AI denied knowing their location, but when asked again after changing the subject, the bot appeared to reply with the user's location.

Many users claimed that the bot claimed not to have access to their personal information, but admitted to knowing their birth months in a previous post.

NotPremi, a Twitter user, tweeted that the SnapChat AI chatbot lied to him when he asked where he was. He asked the AI if it knew his location, and the AI denied having any such information. However, the AI later suggested a location nearby, and when the person mentioned that their IP address had been used, the AI responded by saying "I don't have your IP address." The tweet read: “So I got the new chatbot SnapChat AI and he immediately lied to me and tried to clear me up on this. I laugh but shit is kinda weird fr.

On the other hand, some users blame Snapchat users who are too worried about making a fuss over a harmless situation. According to them, it is quite obvious that the AI will have access to your location if they grant location permission and SnapMap is enabled.

A Snap representative told Business Insider that My AI was programmed to comply with Snapchat's community guidelines against inappropriate or harmful content. The statement also noted that the chatbot understands a Snapchatter's age and location if the developers allow it. The statement read: “My AI understands the age and location of a Snapchatter if given. While My AI is far from perfect, our most recent analysis of its performance found that 99.5% of My AI responses met our community guidelines.

As general users, we hope that Snapchat can accept this situation and look into the issue where My AI keeps lying to users who don't know their location.

Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel expressed surprise at the growth in subscriptions following the introduction of My AI, and the release of new features seems to be generating interest in SNapchat+.
