Tech giant Google plans to add artificial intelligence (AI) features to its search engine. This occurs while battling intense competition from the Open AI chatbot ChatGPT. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the new artificial intelligence features will improve the search engine's ability to answer queries. He dismissed the idea that chatbots are a threat to Google's search business. The search business accounts for more than half of its parent company Alphabet's revenue. Search ads are the biggest source of revenue for the company, generating $162 billion in revenue last year.

As a leader in the development of extensive language models (LLMs), Google has yet to develop technology to influence search patterns. Pichai said people will be able to ask questions and interact with these great language models. Competitor Microsoft has deployed this technology behind its Bing search engine's ChatGPT system. This is one of the toughest threats to Google under Pichai as it faces investor pressure for cost cuts. In January, Google laid off 12,000 jobs, the most ever. The CEO said that Google has not yet reached its goal of being 20% more productive. According to a latest report, Google is also testing new AI features in Gmail. On the other hand, Microsoft offers AI in some of its other business software tools. The Mountain View-based tech giant is being wary of the technology, as researchers have raised concerns about the accuracy of AI-powered chatbots. Pichai said he needed to adapt his resource utilization to continue his work on AI while controlling costs. According to the WSJ report, Google is aiming to win broader business. Last month, it opened up access to one of its biggest artificial intelligence systems, the Pathways language model, to developers of its cloud computing service.
