The Western Railway (WR) on Wednesday launched a mobile app that will allow commuters to check live the status of trains on its commuter network split between Churchgate station in south Mumbai and Dahanu in the nearby Palghar district. According to the zonal railway, the app, "Yatri", also has various other features. Western Railway chief executive Ashok Kumar Misra launched the app in the concourse of Churchgate station in the presence of railway officials and other dignitaries, Sumit Thakur, WR's public relations manager, said in a press release. The Western Railway has installed GPS tracking devices on all of its commuter trains, which will allow the app to provide your location in real time. Thakur said that with the app, developed in conjunction with a private company, travelers will not only be able to get the live location of a train on the map, but also see it in motion.

"In just three simple steps, travelers can see the location live. Travelers can find the nearest stations directly on the map, tap the station of origin and follow the train of their choice so they can calculate how far they are from the train to plan your trip,” he said.

Thakur said that travelers will get authentic information about live train updates, announcements, latest schedules, maps of major railway stations and their services. The software also provides information on Mumbai Metro buses and services, and has a section where users can give feedback.

Passengers will also have easy access to important rail and medical emergency phone numbers and travelers can use the app to explore nearby tourist destinations and places to visit near train stations.

Western Railway said that the app is also compatible with divyangjan. Divyang commuters (people with disabilities) using mobile phones through voice commands can easily find their train's live location with the help of Google Assistant, Thakur said. Last July, Central Railway launched live tracking of its commuter trains through the app.
