Description
Github, a Microsoft-owned software code hosting platform, has laid off its entire Indian engineering team of more than 140 developers to "streamline" the company's operations. "What I'm hearing: India's GitHub engineering team has left. Yesterday, the entire development team was fired in one go. We're talking about 100 engineers," Gergely Orosz, who runs the Pragmatic Engineer newsletter, reported on the layoffs. The layoffs from the Indian team are surprising given that the country is one of the world's largest developer markets and a major technology hub for many large companies. Orosz added that India's labor cost is significantly lower than that of the United States and the European Union.
This could be explained by the fact that the team was smaller than elsewhere, with fewer tasks and lower priority. (ALSO READ: Layoffs at Microsoft: "My whole team was cut," says fired Indian technician)
“As part of the reorganization plan shared in February, headcount reductions were made today as part of difficult but necessary decisions and realignments to protect the health of our business in the near term and provide us with the ability to invest in our long-term strategy. . move on," the Github spokesperson told Tech Crunch news site.
The layoff is part of the 10% staff reduction announced by the company in February.
"While our entire leadership team has carefully deliberated on this step and reached agreement, ultimately, as CEO, the decision is mine. I recognize this will be difficult for all of you, and we will approach this moment with the utmost respect for every Hubber". GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke said in an email to staff members.
