More than 500 companies, including Google, Amazon, Meta and Twitter, have laid off more than 1.5 million workers this year alone, creating a stir in the tech sector. Apple, on the other hand, has not accepted mass layoffs, even as the industry resorted to harsh cost-cutting measures to deal with the post-Covid bubble-burst slowdown. However, to improve efficiency, the iPhone maker is said to have toughened working conditions for employees by requiring them to work from the office at least 3 days a week or risk being fired. (ALSO READ: Apple Delays Bonuses, Limits Hiring in Latest Cost-Cutting Measure) "Apple tracks employee attendance (via badge logs) and will give employees increasing warnings if they don't come in 3 times a week," Platformer editor-in-chief Zoe Schiffer tweeted, adding that some organizations in the company may even fire employees who are not following the guidelines. "At Apple, some organizations say that non-compliance could result in termination, but that doesn't seem to be a company-wide policy," he added.
Starting in September, Apple required its remote workers to come into the office at least three times a week. Some of its workers criticized the policy and demanded a more flexible work environment.
Apple Together, a group of petitioners claiming to be a global solidarity union for Apple employees, demanded that leaders consider the unique demands of each position, as well as the diversity of people.
“Those who request more flexible arrangements have many compelling reasons and circumstances: disabilities (visible or not); family care; safety, health and environmental concerns; Financial considerations; to simply be happier and more productive,” the petition read.
