Twitter chief Elon Musk said Friday that blue legacy checkmarks will be removed as soon as those with blue legacy checkmarks go "really rogue." The statement came in response to a question from a user named Ria from India, who said that the blue ticks are now jokes as they can now be obtained through payment. “The old blue checks will soon be phased out. They are the ones who are really corrupt," Elon Musk said.
"Dear @elonmusk, the blue checkmark has now become a joke. Previously, the blue checkmark verification was only given to people who were public figures and political figures, but unfortunately today, all you Tom Dick and Harry are verified. Their verification mark has lost its charm," the user wrote. One of Musk's first decisions after taking over the microblogging site was to charge users an $8 monthly fee to keep their verified status. Previously, the blue mark was given free of charge to authentic accounts of famous personalities, politicians, journalists and public figures. Although the feature was initially launched in November last year, it was later discontinued because the platform was flooded with accounts posing as celebrities or organizations.
