Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a photo of a roadside tailor who had pasted Paytm QR codes on his sewing machine on social media on Saturday, drawing attention to the wide acceptability of digital payments in India. "This is a typical sight in India... our people have shown great skill in adapting to technology and innovation," he wrote in the retweet. A Twitter user previously shared a photo of a tailor from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh accepting Paytm payments. Alongside the photo, he wrote: "You have to be in Bharat to understand the magnitude of this transformation brought about by the policies of the Narendra Modi government." Netizens were quick to comment on the post, praising the wide availability of digital payments, especially UPI-based transactions. “UPI has brought a revolution in the lives of ordinary Indian citizens. Digital India literally,” commented one Twitter user. "Digital payments are now a way of life in India, for the smallest transactions in the most remote places. It has transformed lives and made things easier," another user replied.
Paytm founder Vijay Shekar Sharma also agreed with the post. “Absolutely sir! The pride of our India is the acceptance and adoption of technology by all the citizens of the country. Thank you for championing and guiding change," he wrote.
India has had great success with digital payments. UPI payments reached an all-time high of 12.82 lakh crore in December last year. In the same month, transactions of Rs 782 crore were completed. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw even claimed that last year India overtook the US, UK, Germany and France in terms of digital payment transactions.
