Amritpal Singh was arrested by the Punjab Police at around 6:45 am in the town of Rode. Security has been tightened in Dibrugarh as radical pro-Khalistan preacher Amritpal Singh is due to be transferred to a jail in the Upper Assam city from Punjab on Sunday, police said. Punjab Police Inspector General Sukhchain Singh Gill said Amritpal Singh would be taken to Dibrugarh under the National Security Act (NSA).
A staggered security arrangement has been concluded at Dibrugarh Central Jail, where Singh will be held, a senior official told PTI.
"The prison compound has been surrounded by the elite Black Cat commandos of the Assam Police, CRPF and prison security personnel. Security inside the prison has also been tightened," he said.
The Dibrugarh traffic police were also alerted about the clearing of the road from the airport to the prison, a stretch of 15 km. A special team is on the scene, as well as the plainclothes police.
According to the sources, Amritpal Singh is taken on board a special flight, which took off from Bathinda at 8:25 am.
Singh was arrested by Punjab police at around 6:45 am in the village of Rode in the northern state after evading arrest for more than a month.
A total of nine of his associates are currently being held at Dibrugarh Central Prison.
Security in and around the prison premises has been tightened since March 19, when four Waris Punjab De (WPD) members were brought here in the first group.
