Some 13 people who attended the open-air Maharashtra Bhushan award ceremony on Sunday at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai, died of heat stroke.
Uddhav Thackeray said that the organizers of the event should be punished as the arrangements were not up to par.
Speaking to the media, Uddhav Thackeray said: "Those who organized this event must be punished. The Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra must take responsibility and resign from their posts. The Maharashtra government announced on Thursday that it had formed a one-member committee to investigate the case. The committee headed by the additional chief secretary of the Department of Revenue will report within a month. The committee will also make recommendations to the government on things to consider in the future when planning such events.
Earlier, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde declared Rs 5 lakh each as compensation for the relatives of the dead adding that his government will bear the medical expenses of those still undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The participants, who suffered from heat stroke during the ceremony, were admitted to the Tata Hospital in Kharghar.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, former Maharashtra Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray, his son Aditya Thackeray and NCP leader Ajit Pawar visited those still being treated at the hospital.
The Maharashtra Bhushan award ceremony was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, CM Shinde and his deputy Devendra Fadnavis.
