The defendant, a taxi driver, was arrested in Gangtok, Sikkim. An 11-year-old girl was allegedly raped and killed on her way home from school by a 29-year-old taxi driver in Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, sparking protests by residents demanding swift action against the accused. Police found the girl's body on April 14, three days after she went missing.

The defendant offered the girl a ride as he walked home from school, a police official said.

"He then stopped at a gas station and bought her snacks and juice. After that, he took her to a nearby woods, where he allegedly raped the minor," the officer said.

The defendant was charged by the Sikkim Police under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the strict Protection of Children Against Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO).

The girl's mother demanded that the defendant be hanged.

“My daughter fought for her life. She was tortured before she died. The same penalty should be given to the defendant. If the defendant is handed over to us, I will torture him in the same way,” the mother said.

Police said further investigations were underway.
