(File) Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart Rishi Sunak today reviewed the progress made on various bilateral issues. The phone call comes weeks after Khalistan supporters removed the national flag at the Indian embassy in London, raising questions about the security of the diplomatic mission.
We also agreed on the need to crack down on anti-Indian elements and ensure the security of Indian diplomatic establishments in the UK. We also discussed the issue of economic criminals.
"Prime Minister Modi raised the issue of the security of Indian diplomatic establishments in the UK and called on the UK government to crack down on anti-Indian elements. Mr Sunak said the UK was considering the attack on Indian High Commission as totally unacceptable and guaranteed the safety of the Indian Mission and its staff," an official statement said.
Prime Minister Modi also called for progress on the return of economic criminals who have taken refuge in the UK.
The two prime ministers reviewed the progress made on a number of bilateral issues, particularly in the trade and economic sectors. They also agreed on the need to quickly conclude a free trade agreement between India and the United Kingdom, according to the statement.
PM Modi also conveyed his greetings on Baisakhi eve to Mr. Sunak. He also invited Mr. Sunak to the G20 summit in September, while the latter reiterated the UK's full support for India's current G20 presidency.
The two leaders last met at a G20 meeting in Bali, Indonesia, last November.
