The Election Commission was questioned today about the 'national' status of Aam Aadmi Part or AAP. The electoral commission said today that it was examining the issue of granting national status to the Aam Aadmi party. "It is under review... We will get back to you soon," election commissioner Rajiv Kumar told a news conference here when asked about the matter.

The electoral performance of the party led by Arvind Kejriwal last year paved the way for its recognition by the Electoral Commission as a national party.

To gain national party status, a political group must be recognized as a state party in four states and have at least two members in the respective legislatures, according to the Electoral Symbols (Reservation and Assignment) Order 1968.

And to be eligible for recognition as a state party, a political group must win two seats and obtain a minimum of six percent of the vote in the state.

There are also other criteria for obtaining the status of a national party.

AAP has been recognized as a State Party in Delhi, Punjab, Goa and Gujarat.

The AAP seized power in Punjab by winning 92 of the 117 assembly seats, recording a landslide victory in state assembly polls last year. It was already recognized as a state part of the state anyway.

in Goa, it won two seats and achieved an overall vote share of 6.77%, leading to its recognition as a state party in the coastal state.

In late 2022, the AAP's national ambition took off by winning five seats and securing a 13% overall vote share in the Gujarat assembly polls, which was enough for the AAP to be recognized as the State Party. .
