The police sent the body for an autopsy. (Representative) An 18-year-old female polytechnic student was found dead in her hostel room in Odisha's Jajpur district on Tuesday, police said. The body of the woman, a third-year electrical engineering student, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her room on the university campus in the Korei police station area, they said.
The incident sparked tension on campus with her family claiming the university administration was responsible for her death as she was forced to take her own life due to continued intimidation.
"A university student told my daughter that she had been selected for an internship on campus, but he threatened her that she would not be allowed to attend. She was so scared that she told us that she would not stay at the hostel anymore. Another student also tried hit her yesterday," her mother said.
"My daughter did not inform the university authorities for fear of the actions of the students involved," he added.
Police sent the body for postmortem examination and said an investigation had been opened.
“We are investigating the case from all possible angles,” said Sanghamitra Mallick, the inspector in charge of the Korei police station.
