The NRC supplementary list in Assam left out more than 1.9 million people. People whose names were included in the 2001 census will be part of Assam's delimitation exercise, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said today, clarifying opposition parties' concerns about the 1.9 million people left out of the draft. end of the national registry of citizens. The updating of the national register of citizens and the delimitation exercise are two separate legal processes and there is nothing to prevent them from being carried out simultaneously, Mr. Kumar said.

The head of the electoral commission also said that 126 assembly seats and 14 parliament seats will remain the same even after the delimitation, indicating that the boundaries of electoral districts will be redrawed.

The NRC Supplemental List released on August 31, 2019 found more than 31.1 million people eligible to be added to the registry. It also left out more than 1.9 million people.

Over the past three days, the Election Commission has met with various stakeholders as part of the scoping exercise in Assam.

Representatives of nine recognized political parties, three registered parties and more than 60 civil society organizations met with the entire Electoral Commission team.

Several opposition parties have questioned why the delimitation exercise is based on the 2001 census rather than the most recent 2011 census. There have been allegations that the ruling BJP is trying to cobble together Muslim-majority seats, which the BJP denied. .

The electoral commission said it would give anyone until April 15 to submit other suggestions. After that, the draft will be published. A period of one month will be granted for suggestions on the project.
