Rahul Gandhi, a representative of Kerala's Wayanad parliamentary constituency, was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on Friday, a day after his conviction in a libel case by a Surat court in Gujarat.
The court sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years in prison in a criminal libel case for his comments about the "surname Modi" during a 2019 survey in Karnataka. However, the court also granted him bail and suspended his sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal to a higher court.
Commenting on the events on Friday, the NCP leader also referred to the disqualification of his party's Lakshadweep MP, Mohammed Faizal PP, following the latter's conviction in an attempted murder case. Faizal's sentence was later stayed by the Kerala High Court.
"The disqualification of Mr. Rahul Gandhi and Mr. Faizal a few months ago as Lok Sabha MPs is contrary to the fundamental principles of the constitution, where democratic values are reduced. It is condemnable and contrary to the principles themselves. It is based the constitution,” Pawar tweeted.
"Our constitution guarantees the right of every individual to a fair justice, freedom of thought, equal status and opportunity and the brotherhood that guarantees the dignity of all Indians. #RahulGandhi," former Justice Minister 'Union said in a series of tweets.
We must all unite to defend our democratic institutions, he added.
