The visit of the Japanese prime minister is expected to last approximately 27 hours. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida arrived in New Delhi on Monday morning to explore ways to strengthen bilateral ties in various fields including defense and security, trade and investment, and high technology. During their talks later today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Kishida are also expected to discuss priorities for India's G20 presidency and Japan's G7 presidency.

Japan's prime minister is expected to unveil his plan for a "free and open Indo-Pacific," emphasizing India's growing role for the region during the visit. Developments in the Indo-Pacific amid China's increasing military assertiveness are also likely to figure in high-profile talks between PM Modi and PM Kishida.

He is expected to unveil his "free and open plan for peace in the Indo-Pacific" during a keynote address to a leading think tank this afternoon.

The plan is expected to highlight India's importance to the Indo-Pacific.

At the prestigious Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore last June, Prime Minister Kishida said he would present the Indo-Pacific plan next spring.

"I will submit a 'Free and Open Indo-Pacific Peace Plan' by next spring, which will strengthen Japan's efforts to further promote the vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific, with an emphasis on providing patrol boats and improving enforcement. maritime law capabilities, as well as cybersecurity, digital and green initiatives, and economic security,” he said.

The plan should provide details on Japan's policy and approach towards the Indo-Pacific.

In recent years, almost all the great powers have presented their strategies for the Indo-Pacific.

Japan has pushed for a free and open Indo-Pacific with a view to maintaining and strengthening the rules-based international order in the region.
