8 dead, 11 rescued after cold store roof collapsed in UPs Sambhal

The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, authorities said. A total of eight people have died while 11 have been rescued so far, after the roof of a potato cold store in the Chandausi area of Sambhal in UP collapsed, authorities said. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (SDRF) conduct rescue operations.

Moradabad DIG Shalabh Mathur told ANI that eight people were killed in the incident.

"A total of eight people died and 11 people were rescued. Other people are missing. There is a basement in the building and we are trying to get to that," he said.

Sambhal DM Manish Bansal said officials were using sniffer dogs to search for people trapped in the rubble.

“The NDRF searches for trapped people with the help of sniffer dogs. We have increased our numbers for the morning. Other NDRF and SDRF teams will also come in the morning,” he said.

Police Superintendent (SP) Sambhal Chakresh Mishra said that the FIR was registered against the owner.

"FIR enregistré contre le propriétaire et deux autres. Nous avons retenu quatre personnes pour interrogatoire. " said.

It was previously reported that the godown was already in a dilapidated state.

According to the authorities, the owners have been identified as Ankur Agarwal and Rohit Agarwal.

Moradabad DIG Shalabh Mathur said the police booked the two owners.

"An FIR has been registered in this case. Two defendants (Ankur Agarwal and Rohit Agarwal) have been convicted under Section 304. Both defendants are the owners of the facility where the incident occurred," it stated.

The DIG further added: "An investigation has also been carried out at the WMD level on this. The part of the cold room that collapsed was built some time ago and was not built according to established standards."
