Himanta Sarma told the assembly that the number of jobless fell from 22 to 12 lakhs. Speaking before the state assembly, Mr. Sarma said: "The state government will eradicate child marriage from the state. There are around 1000 people in jail for child marriage and they have not gotten bail yet because the court is very firm on this issue ." The massive crackdown on child marriage began on February 3, with more than 3,000 people allegedly linked to child marriages detained in Assam so far.

The state cabinet recently approved a proposal to charge men who married girls under the age of 14 under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offenses Act 2012 (POCSO).

While briefing the state assembly, Mr. Sarma further said that the state maintains the debt-to-GDP ratio at 23% and the BJP-led government in Assam will outpace Punjab's GDP for the next three years.

"Punjab's GDP is around Rs 6.80 000 crore. Assam's GDP will touch Rs 4.93 000 crore," he said.

In terms of unemployment in the state, Mr. Sarma told the assembly that the number of jobless has been reduced from 22 lakhs to 12 lakhs.

"There is now an environment in Assam where jobs are awarded solely on merit and there is full transparency. Sometimes I have to bear criticism from some party members for not allowing them to recommend a single candidate for the posts," CM added.
