Police investigate the death of a man in Chatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, days after he was chained to a tree and allegedly beaten because his son married a woman from the same village. Udha Ahirwar's wife, Savitri, claimed that her daughter-in-law's relatives broke into their house and killed him. Police, however, said the man was upset by the humiliation of the public assault and took his own life on March 4.

Six defendants have been charged with incitement to suicide and unwarranted coercion, and the police are looking for them.

Police said Udha Ahirwar's son Shankar and a woman from the same village were working as laborers in Rajasthan. The two would have been married there. Both families are of the same caste. But the woman's father was furious when he found out about the wedding. It is alleged that he and five others took Udha Ahirwar to another village in Panchampur, chained him to a tree and beat him.

He was eventually released and returned home. Two days later, he was found hanged in his bedroom.

His wife alleged that the assailants broke into their house when Ahirwar was alone, killed him and hung up his body. Police, however, denied the charge, saying the man appears to have committed suicide. Further investigation into this horrifying incident is ongoing.
