Police are still investigating whether they were transporting beef. A Muslim man from Siwan district, Bihar, died in a hospital on Tuesday night after he was severely beaten by a mob on suspicion of transporting beef. Naseem Qureshi, 56, a resident of Hasanpur village, and his nephew Firoz Ahmed Qureshi were on their way to meet acquaintances when mobs allegedly intercepted them in Jogia village, some 110 km northwest of Patna, he says. Police said they were caught by villagers near a mosque. When Firoz Qureshi managed to escape, the crowd beat Nazeem Qureshi with wooden sticks. According to the police, the mob itself handed over Mr. Qureshi to the Rasulpur village police, after which he was rushed to hospital, but died during treatment.
Local sarpanch Sushil Singh and two others Ravi Sah and Ujwal Sharma were arrested for mob lynching. Police are searching for two other men who were also named in the complaint filed by Firoz's nephew Ahmed Qureshi.
