Senior Congress official P Chidambaram has alleged that most of the election bonds worth more than Rs 12 billion sold so far have been donated to the BJP anonymously by companies, saying corporate donations are a way to thank the government for many "favors". The former union finance minister also questioned why companies are so willing to donate through the "non-transparent mechanism of electoral bonds". "More than Rs 12 billion worth of election bonds have been sold so far. Most of the amount was bought by companies and donated to the BJP anonymously," Chidambaram claimed in a series of tweets on Monday night.
Businesses don't donate through campaign bonds because they love democracy, he said.
"The corporate donation is a way of expressing your appreciation to the government for the many favors it has obtained in recent years," said the leader of Congress.
"It's a neat arrangement. Favors are given discreetly. Rewards are received secretly. Long live our anonymous democracy," he said.
