When voting for the Meghalaya Assembly began on Monday, the top five voters received souvenirs in a bid to encourage high turnout and early morning voting. Voting is underway at 3,419 polling stations in 59 state assembly districts. Voting will continue until 4 pm Of the 60 Assembly constituencies in Meghalaya, 36 constituencies are in the Khasi, Jaintia Hills region, while 24 are in the Garo Hills region. Significantly, however, the vote for the Sohiong Assembly constituency was postponed following the death of former state interior minister and United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate for the HDR seat, Lyngdoh.
