Siddique Kappan, a Kerala journalist arrested in Uttar Pradesh more than two years ago while covering the alleged rape of a young woman whose death sparked nationwide protests, was released today. He had been in jail for more than a month after being released on bail in the two cases against him. Kappan was due to leave last night, but could not be released because the judge of a special court that hears money laundering cases was busy with an election for the lawyers' council.
