(Representative) Enrollment in tertiary institutions increased to Rs 4.14 crore in 2020-2021, crossing the Rs 4 crore mark for the first time, according to the Government Survey of Tertiary Education (AISHE) 2020-2021. It registered an increase of 7.5% compared to 2019-2020 and 21% compared to 2014-15.
The female enrollment increased from Rs 1.88 crore to Rs 2.01 crore in 2019-20. There has been an increase of around 44 lakh (28%) in their number since 2014-15, according to the survey report.
The Ministry of Education has been conducting an All India Survey of Tertiary Education (AISHE) since 2011, covering all tertiary institutions located in Indian territory and providing tertiary education in the country.
The survey collects detailed information on different parameters such as student enrollment, teacher data, infrastructure information, financial information, etc.
For the first time at AISHE 2020-21, Higher Education Institutions, or HEIs, completed data online through the Web Data Capture Format (DCF) developed by the Department of Higher Education with the assistance of the National Computing Center ( NIC).
"Total tertiary enrollment increased to almost Rs 4.14 crore in 2020-21 from Rs 3.85 crore in 2019-20. Since 2014-15, there has been an increase of about Rs 72 crore (21 pc). Female enrollment increased to Rs 2.01 crore from Rs 1.88 crore in 2019-2020.There was an increase of around 44 Lakh (28 pc) from 2014-15,” the Department of Education said in a statement.
"The percentage of female enrollment in total enrollment increased from 45% in 2014-15 to around 49% in 2020-21. Based on 2011 population projections for the 18-23 age group, GER increased from 25.6 to 27.3 in 2019-20”, he added.
According to the survey, there was a significant increase of 28% in SC student enrollment and 38% in SC female student enrollment in 2020-21 compared to 2014-15.
“Substantial 47% increase in S&T student enrollment and a 63.4% increase in female S&T student enrollment in 2020-21, compared to 2014-15. Enrollment at the Institute of National Significance ( INI) increased by almost 61% during the period 2014-15 to 2020-21.
"Enrollment increased in 2020-21 compared to 2014-15 in specialized colleges related to defense, Sanskrit, biotechnology, forensics, design, sports, etc. The total number of fainting increased to 95.4 Lakh in 2020-21 from 94 Lakh in 2019-20,” he said.
