Two traffic police officers were injured after being struck by a car driven by a drunk man on Friday afternoon, police said.

The defendant was arrested after a brief pursuit, they specified, adding that the incident occurred when the driver of the vehicle was trying to avoid the challán.

Police chief Vikas, who suffered a head injury, is receiving treatment at a hospital while his colleague HC Surat has been released after being treated for minor abrasions, they said.

The defendant was identified as Santosh (31), a resident of the JJ settlement in Dwarka, police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) M Harsha Vardhan said that around 2:15 am a Maruti Ertiga car driven by a person under the influence of alcohol hit two traffic policemen. The incident occurred in Dwarka Sector 1.

Officers immediately gave chase to the car and arrested Dabri's driver, he said.

He was sent for a medical examination and his blood alcohol level was found to be six times the legal limit, it added.

A case was filed under articles 186 (Obstruction of a public official in the performance of his public duties), 353 (Assault or use of criminal force to dissuade a public official from performing his duties) and 307 (Attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. registered at the Dwarka South police station, the senior police officer said.

“It appears that the defendant attempted to prevent the challan that led to this incident,” the DCP said.
