Description

The investigation concerns the registration of financial interests Jess Phillips (Yui Mok/PA) A parliamentary watchdog has launched an investigation into shadow minister Jess Phillips' declaration of interests.

The Commissioner for Standards opened an inquiry on 24 April into an alleged breach of the code of conduct for parliamentarians.

The accusation relates to paragraph 14 of the code, which refers to the registration of financial interests.

According to the code, members must be "open and direct in calling attention to any relevant interest in any proceeding of the House or its committees, and in any communication with ministers, members, officials or public office."

Ms Phillips was reprimanded last year after an inquiry by the watchdog found she had failed to register an amount of outside earnings within the 28-day deadline set by the House of Commons.

These included payment for an appearance on the TV show I Have News For You, which the Minister for Shadow Protection said was a "clerical error".

The Commissioner decides whether an MP has broken the rules after an investigation.

Under the Members' Code of Conduct, members must "always be open and direct in calling attention to any relevant interests" obtained outside Parliament.
