Kempston search: Two found dead searching for canoeists who capsized in river

Formal identification of the bodies has not yet taken place. Two bodies found while searching for canoers that 'capsized' in the Great Ouse River Two people have been found dead following reports of canoeists encountering difficulties on the Great Ouse River.

Officers received a call about two capsized boats and possibly a woman struggling on an embankment in Kempston, Bedford on Sunday morning.

Bedfordshire Police said a formal identification had not yet been made and the coroner had been notified.

Officers also asked the public to avoid the Weir Embankment and Water Lane areas while investigations continue.

The force said on Sunday: "Members of the public may have seen an emergency services presence on the Weir Embankment in Water Lane, Kempston this morning following reports received around 10:50am of two overturned canoes and a possible female in trouble."

“Officers, working with Beds fire and rescue teams and EEAST ambulance service, searched the river and sadly two people were discovered dead.

“Both bodies have been found and the Bedfordshire coroner has been notified.

"At this time, no formal identification has been made. Our officers are continuing to work to establish this."

“A police presence will remain in the area while our investigations continue.

"We would like to ask members of the public to avoid traveling to the Weir/Water Lane Embankment area if they can while we conduct further investigation."
