Lawyers who refuse to prosecute climate protesters or act on behalf of fossil fuel interests have been accused by the government of "undermining" the rule of law and the independence of the legal profession.

Attorney General Michael Tomlinson said the pledge, made by more than 100 lawyers, was "fundamentally at odds with the idea that everyone has a right to a fair trial."

But he was accused of making an argument in "bad faith" and ignoring the ethical dilemmas lawyers face.
