Description

The King will remember those who perished in the allied bombing of Hamburg in 1943 and will celebrate the Kindertransporte that saved thousands of children from the Nazis. Charles will focus on World War II as his three-day state visit to Germany with the Queen consort comes to an end. During his Bundestag speech on Thursday, Charles highlighted how, on the last day of his state visit, he will remember those who perished in the Allied bombing of Hamburg.

In Hamburg, together with the German president and his wife, Charles and the queen consort will visit the Saint Nicholas Monument, the remains of a church that was destroyed when the Allies bombed the city during World War II.

Hamburg was virtually brought down by Operation Gomorrah, a major bombing campaign against the city described as unmatched by any Allied air raid in Europe during the conflict.

At the site, the King and the President will lay floral offerings in a short remembrance ceremony.

In his speech before the Bundestag, Charles said: “…once again we will stand with the German people in solemn remembrance.

"In Hamburg, I will honor the Kindertransporte memorial, which 85 years ago saved the lives of more than 10,000 Jewish children from Nazism and gave them a safe-conduct to a new life in Britain."
