The Prince of Wales said his mother would be "disappointed" that the UK has not yet made progress in tackling homelessness. William appeared in a short film as part of the Comic Relief 2023 program where he sat down with two people who had been made homeless. For the film, William visited Groundswell, a homeless organization supported by Comic Relief, and spoke with Nawshin and Miles.
He said that his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, had been interested and involved in tackling this problem all her life.
"My mother introduced me to the cause of homelessness at a young age and I'm so glad she exposed me to this, this part of life," he said.
"I think she would be disappointed that we weren't more focused on addressing homelessness and preventing it than probably when she was interested and involved in it."
I think (my mom) would be disappointed that we weren't further along in fighting homelessness and preventing it than we probably were when she was interested and involved in it.
Sitting down with Nawshin and Miles, the Prince of Wales told them: "I'm here to learn a little more about you two, to learn a little more about your lived experience of being homeless."
Nawshin described his story as "relatively complicated", having been in and out of a mental hospital and homeless.
She said the constant changes had affected her 'psyche', adding: 'It affects your self-confidence. You stop being a unique individual.
Miles told William that he went through a "dark and difficult time about five years ago", saying that he had "hit rock bottom" after suffering his tenth seizure.
"Life threw so many things at me. I had to lose everything to find out what I needed," she said.
"When you're homeless, you don't have a support network, you don't have people you can trust, it makes it even more painful," Nawshin added, to which William nodded in acknowledgment.
“There's a lot of stigma, there's a lot of misconceptions about what homelessness is,” William said.
"Organizations like Groundswell rely heavily on being able to do their work with funds from Comic Relief, so it's absolutely vital that we support them in any way we can."
