Couple arrested by police investigating detectives murder released

A man and woman arrested by detectives investigating the attempted murder of a senior detective in Northern Ireland have been released. They were arrested in connection with the investigation into the shooting of Chief Inspector John Caldwell in Omagh, County Tyrone, last month. The 45-year-old man, detained in the Belfast area on Tuesday under the Terrorism Act, was released on Wednesday night.

The 34-year-old woman was arrested in Omagh on Wednesday.

He was suspected of perverting the course of justice and aiding criminals after a property search in the Omagh region.

The woman was released on bail Wednesday night pending further police investigation.

Other arrests were made earlier and all the suspects were released after being questioned.

Caldwell was shot multiple times at a sports complex in Omagh after coaching a youth soccer team last month.

He remains in critical but stable condition at the hospital.

Police have opened an investigation into an attempted murder.

They described the splinter republican group, the New IRA, as their main line of inquiry.

Detectives reiterated their call for witnesses or those with information to contact 101.

Detectives are also highlighting a reward of up to £150,000 from the Crimestoppers charity.
