Ms Powell wrote to Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer demanding that Mr Sharp's position be "urgently clarified", saying his involvement in arranging an £800,000 loan for Mr Johnson has "damaged deep perception of the BBC's impartiality and independence from the government."
He added in his letter: “As the final arbiter of these issues, Richard Sharp's position, which was already increasingly untenable, urgently needs to be clarified.
“He is the one who must give staff, spectators and whistleblowers the confidence that the organization has acted proportionately and fairly. It is completely incapable of carrying out this function.
He also asked the Minister to clarify when the inquiry into Mr Sharp's appointment would be completed.
