Description
More yellow weather warnings for snow and ice are in force in Scotland on Friday, as the country experienced some of the coldest March temperatures in 13 years this week. A snow and ice warning is in effect for most of the north and east of Scotland, as well as the central belt. There is another yellow warning for the south of Scotland via Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish borders.
Snow and ice warnings are also in effect over the weekend until Sunday for much of Scotland except the West Highlands.
The temperature fell to minus 16C in Altnaharra in the Highlands on Wednesday night, making it the coldest night of 2023 so far, the Met Office said.
It also marked the UK's lowest recorded minimum temperature for the month of March since 2010, when Braemar in Aberdeenshire fell to minus 18.6°C.
Some schools were closed in Aberdeenshire on Thursday due to heavy snowfall in the area, but Aberdeenshire Council said Thursday night there were no closures scheduled for Friday.
The snow is part of Storm Larissa, which also brought 50 mph winds and up to 16 inches of snow to parts of the country.
Orange weather warnings are in effect across Yorkshire and North Wales and are expected to cause significant disruption.
