Hollywood stars and cruise passenger memorabilia appear in photo exhibit

Elizabeth Taylor, Rita Hayworth and Nelson Mandela will be featured alongside memorabilia from cruise passengers and crew in a photo exhibition celebrating Cunard's luxury line. Hundreds of former passengers have submitted their holiday photos following a call for images for the Sea Views digital exhibition, curated by British photographer and filmmaker Mary McCartney. The show, which can be viewed online beginning Thursday, includes images from Cunard's photo archive, including famous faces, as well as memorabilia from guests and crew.

Mary McCartney said: "It has been a pleasure to delve into the archives and discover never-before-seen photographs that capture the essence of iconic Cunard moments, showcasing the glamour, elegance and adventures families and friends shared together.

“It was not just about showcasing history, but also about celebrating the millions of travelers who have embarked on unforgettable journeys around the world.

"Browsing the archives and reading the stories submitted by passengers from all corners of the world, I was struck by the strong sense of community and connection that Cunard has fostered over the years. It has been an honor to bring these stories to life. through the exhibition.

Passengers from around the world, including the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom, submitted their photos for the exhibition, which marks more than 100 years of shipboard photography and the centenary of the first circumnavigation of the world by ship. Laconia.

Peter Fittock, from Thurso, sent photos taken by his grandfather Jasper Harold Fittock, who worked as a pantry or butler in Aquitaine and Carmania.

His grandfather's image of Western film star Tom Mix leaving Aquitaine on his horse Tony during a trip to England is among those featured in the online exhibit.

Fittock said: "My grandfather was the principal crew member of the SS Carmania, serving on her during her time as an armed merchant cruiser in World War I and until her decommissioning in 1935.

"I have an account of the battle he fought with the German armed merchant cruiser Cape Trafalgar.

“My grandfather received a copy of the ship's bell, one of eight cast from the original, when he left the ship. He retired from Cunard before World War II.

South African President Nelson Mandela's journey on the Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) from Durban to Cape Town in 1998 is captured in the exhibit, with a photo showing him laughing with his girlfriend Graca Machel, whom he married later that year.

In a message in the ship's guest book, he wrote: “Traveling on QE2 has been an unforgettable honor and pleasure.

The present exhibition is also a photo taken from the Cunard archives of Sir Winston Churchill operating Queen Elizabeth's commands, a cigare à la main, in the 1940s, and another mount by the American actress Rita Hayworth regarding after the rambardes d' a boat.

Hollywood star Elizabeth Taylor is pictured with her dog, and Harry Lillis Crosby, better known as Bing, is pictured with a camera aboard the Queen Mary.
