The search for a successor to Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon began after her surprise resignation.
Ms Sturgeon stunned Holyrood on Wednesday when she told a hastily arranged news conference that she had to resign. The SNP leader insisted that recent political challenges, such as the UK government's decision to halt its gender recognition reforms, had not influenced the decision.
