Make it easier for MPs to claim severance pay after losing their seat: committee

Description

Rules on severance pay for MPs should be relaxed and the body that sets members' pay should examine how the current package compares with more favorable international regimes, MPs suggested.

The House of Commons administration committee has said that payments for loss of office should not be "contingent" on the closure of an MP office and should instead be treated more like a redundancy agreement.

In its report Smoothing the edge of the cliff: Supporting MPs as they exit from elected office, the committee said: “The loss of office pay should be treated as a severance package to support MPs in their transition from the Room to another vocation.
