Introduction

1940s two seat helicopter Sikorsky R-6 was also known as Hoverfly 2  when it was serving in Royal Air Force and Royal Navy. It was originated in United States by Sikorsky Aircraft. The first flight of this helicopter was on October 15, 1943 and after two years of testing it was introduced in 1945.


Till date its 225 units were built and was used by navy and airforce.

Development

Sikorsky R-6 is a successor of already successful Sikorsky R-4. The transmission system and the main rotor were used from the R-4 Model. This helicopter was designed with new streamlined fuselage.

Earlier aircraft i.e. Sikorsky R-4 was capable of flying at 82 mph. however the new model was able to fly at 100 mph.

Main rotor diameter is 38 ft.
