Introduction

The main quality of this aircraft is this requires very short runway for takeoff and landing. which is abbreviated as STOL.  It has a piston powered engine. First flight of this aircraft was on April 9, 1964 and Royal Canadian Air Force was its primary user.

Total 122 number of these aircraft were built by de Havilland Canada.

 

This aircraft was also used by UN missions across the middle east until 1979

Development

In 1962 the STOL was the main requirement of the  U.S. Army. So, de Havilland Canada proposed this design which got finalized in 1963. This aircraft made its first flight on April 9, 1964.


It's Take off distance was only around 50 ft. and landing distance was also the same. The company also planned to launch this aircraft for commercial usage but the project was abandoned because of losses.


In February 2006 and British Columbia company bought a licence to again manufacture the aircraft of this type and started the work. They modified this plane with modern technology equipment and turboprop engines.

Accidents

In total it had 26 accidents. The major one was that of Zambian Air Force  which was crashed right after the takeoff in Libreville Gabon. The below attached video seems to be of the same accident which killed everyone in the plane.
