Charkhi Dadri mid-air collision

Introduction

It was November 12, 1996 and location was Charkhi Dadri, Haryana, India When a mid air collision occurred. This crash killed all 349 people on both aircraft. It was world's deadliest mid-air collision and world's deadliest aviation accident occurred in India.

The first aircraft involved in this accident was Boeing 747 carrying 312 people out of which 289 were passengers and 23 were crew. This aircraft belonged to Saudi Arabian Airlines.

The second aircraft involved in the accident was Ilyushin Il-76 carrying 37 people out of which 27 were passengers and 10 were crew. This aircraft belonged to Kazakhstan Airlines.


The investigation reports revealed that the cause of this accident was the failure of pilot of Kazakhstan Airlines as he was not able follow the ATC instructions may be because of cloud turbulence or due to communication problems. The lack of english skills was also one of the factors concluded at the time of investigation. As per the Indian air controllers the Kazakhstani pilots were also used meter and kilometer units where was globally feet and nautical miles were in use so, this was leading to some calculation errors or confusion.

The tail of Kazakhstan Plane clipped the left wing of the Boeing 747 which was Saudi Arabian jet.

After this air crash India made is Mandatory for all aircraft flying in and out of India must have airborne collision avoidance system installed in them.
