Introduction
It was May 25, 1979 and the flight was scheduled from Chicago to Los Angeles. The aircraft was McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10 which was taking off from runway 32R. It was carrying 271 people out of which 258 were passengers and 13 crew members. This crash also killed 2 people and injured 2 on the ground. It was the deadliest aviation accident in United States.
The investigation report revealed that the aircraft was normally taking off and after reaching the takeoff speed the engine no. 1 of the aircraft got separated from it. When the engine detached from the aircraft it broke the power supply of the cockpit voice recorder of the aircraft hence, there is no recordings of the last 50 seconds. Engine failure also hampered several other systems such as number 1 hydraulic system also failed. Hydraulic system 3 also failed and its fluids started leaking the aircraft, only hydraulic system 2 was working properly.
The aircraft was only able to climb 325 feet above the ground level and then it stalled back on the hit the ground.
In 2011 a memorial was built and dedicated to the people who lost their lives in this crash.
